ABOUT THE CHAIR

The story of
the Series 7.

Arne Jacobsen designed the Series 7 in 1955 as a development of the Ant from 1952. The moulded veneer shell got a wider back and four legs, and the chair became Fritz Hansen’s greatest success: more than seven million have been sold. The form has been unchanged ever since; only the frame and cover have been renewed.

The Series 7 comes lacquered, in veneer, front-upholstered or fully upholstered in leather and fabric. The variants include the chair with armrests (3207), the office chair on castors (3117 and 3217) and the bar stool (3187 and 3197). All are built on the same shell, and all can be reupholstered.

We sell original chairs in two versions: used shells we have reupholstered in our own workshop, and unused chairs bought in as collection samples. Both come with a 24-month right to complain about defects, and the cover can be chosen freely from our leathers and fabrics.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What customers
ask about.

What is the difference between the Series 7, the 7 chair and model 3107?

It is the same chair. Arne Jacobsen designed it in 1955 for Fritz Hansen as model 3107. In Denmark it is known as Syveren or the 7 chair. The version with armrests is 3207, the office chair 3117/3217 and the bar stool 3187/3197.

How do I tell an original Series 7 from a copy?

An original Fritz Hansen chair has the manufacturer’s mark under the seat, a shell of nine layers of moulded veneer with a clear edge, and a chrome-plated steel frame with four legs welded to a bracket under the seat. Copies often have a thinner shell, different proportions and screws that do not sit like the original’s. All chairs in our shop are original Fritz Hansen.

What does a Series 7 chair cost?

A new Series 7 costs from about DKK 4,000 in lacquered wood and from DKK 8,000 in leather at retailers. With us, a used, newly reupholstered Series 7 in leather typically costs DKK 2,800 to 5,200 depending on the type of leather and condition. See current prices on the chairs above.

Can I get the chair in a different cover?

Yes. All our Series 7 chairs can be reupholstered in the leather or fabric you want. Choose the cover directly on the product, or send us a picture of your own chair and get a quote for reupholstery.

Does the Series 7 suit my dining table?

The Series 7 has a seat height of 46 cm and suits tables of 72 to 75 cm. With 1.5 cm leg extensions you get a seat height of 47.5 cm, which many prefer at higher tables. Both can be chosen as extras.
