DANISH FURNITURE MANUFACTURER, SVENDBORG · grundlagt 1954
Erik Jørgensen
Erik Jørgensen is not a designer but an upholsterer. He founded the factory in Svendborg in 1954, and it still produces some of the most ambitious upholstered furniture in Denmark: the Corona chair, the Ox Chair and the EJ 315 and EJ 220 sofas. We sell the Corona used and reupholster all EJ furniture.
The upholsterer’s factory
Erik Jørgensen was a trained upholsterer when he started his workshop in Svendborg in 1954. The factory specialised in what others did not dare: chairs in which the upholstery is the entire form. In 1964 it put Poul M. Volther’s Corona chair into production, and in 1960 Hans J. Wegner had designed the Ox Chair, whose production Erik Jørgensen took over.
From the 1970s came the EJ 220 and EJ 315 sofas, designed by the factory’s own studio, and later collaborations with Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen, Hannes Wettstein and Anne-Mette Jensen. Today the company is called Fredericia after a merger, but the furniture still carries the EJ numbers.
Corona, EJ 5 and EJ 315
The Corona chair EJ 5 consists of four oval cushions on a steel frame and is one of the most demanding chairs to reupholster: each cushion is shaped in foam and covered with leather cut in one piece. The EJ 315 is an upholstered sofa with a fixed back and loose seat cushions that is found in thousands of Danish living rooms.
We reupholster the Corona in aniline leather and wool, the EJ 315 and EJ 220 in leather and fabric, and we check the frame and springs at the same time. See the used Corona chairs in the online shop.
