Svend Skipper
Svend Skipper is behind Skipper Furniture in Durup in Salling, one of the Danish factories that made high-quality upholstered easy chairs and sofas affordable for everyone. Skipper furniture from the 1960s and 70s is built to be reupholstered, and we do it often.
Upholstered furniture from Salling
Skipper Furniture is a family business in Durup that has produced upholstered furniture since the middle of the 20th century: high-backed easy chairs, sofas with loose cushions and recliners with a tilt function. The factory worked with Danish architects and its own designers and sold throughout Scandinavia.
The furniture is recognisable by solid frames in beech and oak, high-quality springs and covers in leather or wool. It was often sold as a set: sofa, two easy chairs and footstool.
Worth reupholstering
Skipper furniture does not have the collector’s value of Wegner or Mogensen, but it is just as well built. The frame and springs last 50 years, and reupholstery in new leather or wool gives a piece that can last 20 more years for a fraction of the price of a new sofa of the same quality.
