DANISH FURNITURE DESIGNER · 1929–1980
Poul Kjærholm
Poul Kjærholm worked in steel where the other Danish designers worked in wood. His chairs are as precise as instruments, and the leather on them is part of the construction. We sell the PK22 used and reupholster Kjærholm’s chairs in leather and canvas.
Steel like cabinetmaker’s wood
Kjærholm trained as a cabinetmaker in Hjørring and studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where he later taught himself. His graduation project, the PK25 from 1951, was already in steel and flag halyard. He treated steel the way cabinetmakers treat wood: visible joints, minimal dimensions and no decoration.
From 1955 E. Kold Christensen produced his furniture, and since 1982 Fritz Hansen has done so. The PK furniture is among the most expensive Danish classics, and the originals from Kold Christensen are collector’s items.
Leather, canvas and cane
The PK22 from 1956 has seat and back in one piece of leather or woven cane, stretched over a frame of spring steel. The PK24, the chaise longue from 1965, is in cane or leather. The PK31 is an upholstered sofa and easy chair in leather. On all three the cover is visible from every side, so reupholstery has to be perfect.
We reupholster the PK22 and PK31 in original leather or canvas and check the steel and springs at the same time. See the used PK22 chairs in the online shop when we have them in stock.
