DANISH FURNITURE DESIGNER · 1923–2005
Nanna Ditzel
Nanna Ditzel was the first lady of Danish design for more than 50 years. She designed furniture, jewellery, textiles and toys, and the upholstery fabric Hallingdal, which she designed for Kvadrat in 1965, is one we still use for reupholstery.
Furniture, jewellery and fabric
Ditzel trained as a cabinetmaker and attended the School of Arts and Crafts, where she met Jørgen Ditzel. Together they designed furniture, children’s furniture and jewellery for Georg Jensen until Jørgen died in 1961. The Hanging Egg Chair in woven rattan from 1957 dates from that period and is still produced by Sika-Design.
In 1965 she designed Hallingdal, a wool fabric in more than 60 colours for Kvadrat, which became the standard fabric on Danish design furniture for decades. After years in London she returned to Denmark in 1986 and designed the Trinidad chair for Fredericia in 1993, at the age of 70.
Reupholstery in Hallingdal
Hallingdal 65 is still available in almost all the original colours and is the fabric we use most often when a customer wants a Mogensen sofa or a Series 7 back to the look it once had. It is hard-wearing, colourful and easy to care for.
We reupholster Ditzel’s own upholstered furniture, such as the ND-83 easy chair and the sofas from Kolds Savværk, in wool or leather by arrangement.
