DANISH ARCHITECT AND PROFESSOR · 1903–1985
Ole Wanscher
Ole Wanscher designed furniture with roots in history: 18th-century England, ancient Egypt and Chinese chairs. The result is light, elegant furniture that Carl Hansen & Søn still produce, and that we reupholster in leather and linen.
Klint’s successor
Wanscher studied under Kaare Klint and took over his professorship at the Royal Academy’s furniture school in 1955. Like Klint he measured old furniture and wrote books on the history of furniture, and his own chairs continue the best historical types in a lighter, Danish version.
He designed for A.J. Iversen, P. Jeppesen and France & Søn, and his furniture was sold in the USA as “Danish Modern”. Today it is produced by Carl Hansen & Søn.
Furniture with loose cushions
The Colonial Chair from 1949 has loose leather cushions on a light frame in rosewood or mahogany. The Egyptian Chair from 1960 is based on a folding chair from Tutankhamun’s tomb. Both are easy to reupholster, because the cushions can be taken out and rebuilt.
We reupholster Wanscher’s cushions in saddle leather, aniline leather or wool and check the cane and joints on the frame at the same time.
